I've fed Gizmo and Gadget "Chicken Soup for the Dog Lover's Soul" brand dog food for 2+ years now. Gizmo has thrown up a couple times a month on it, so we decided to switch to something more "stomach friendly"
however, changing abruptly has caused them to have diarrhea, so i'm mixing in some of the old food, some new food, and some science diet "sensitive stomach formula" -- tricia's mom told me that the corn in the science diet would be good for the transition.
what do you feed your pugs? what should i feed mine? they get a little bit of table food, but not very much at all, comparatively.Gizmo and Gadget's Dad
I feed my pug Eukanuba Lamb and Rice, and he seems to like it. We found out a few months ago that Miguel (my pug) has quite a few allergies. A few things he is allergic to are wheat and dairy products, which knocks out a lot of possible treats for him. He loves chewing on bones, but unfortunately the remnants of meat and fat on the bones are contributing to his increasing amount of pudge. If anyone has any suggestions for puggy treats that are a bit healthier than big old meat bones, but do not include wheat or dairy, I would love to hear them! :)
I feed mines with Nutro Lamb and rice, and they love it. They have never been sick from it and their hair its beautiful. Before i used to by Nutro chicken and rice and it was ok, this one is much better and they have 6 months eating it. Of course the male eats more than the girl she is more worry about her looks.
lamb and rice seem to be good. my old food (chicken soup for the dog lover's soul) was really good for them, but a couple times a month, gizmo would throw up. i'm not sure if it's just his sensitive stomach or if it's the food.
i've switched, but i made the switch too abruptly, so G&G are getting some diarrhea, which isn't good.
Monty gets Dick Van Patten's Natural Balance lamb and rice formula. Monty has a problem throwing up all the time. We don't know what the do. The vet has us giving him pepcid ac once a day but it doesn't seem to be working.
I don't know if he needs a new food or not. He used to eat Nutro, maybe we should go back.
I feed my dogs healthwise lamb meal and oatmeal formula. it really cut down on strong gas and loose stools. I get it at a pet store called pet people not far from where I live.
My little baby Porky just came home from a long visit to the Grandparents and have gained a whopping 10lbs...omg!!!
Our two boys, Pork and Brown, eat dog food for breakfast (regular chicken and rice...we switch off between the different premium brands every few months to make meals more exciting) and some treats throughout the day. I suggest the book called "Canine Nutrition, Choosing the Best Foods for Your Breed" ( check out info at http://www.animalwellnessmagazine.com/m/m81/main.htm). I did some research a while back and it suggested feeding dogs food based on their ancestral foods. Pugs originated from the Tibetan mountains (as there is controversy over their origin, it's more widely known as Chinese Pug) and ancestral foods included chicken and rice. For dinner, I serve them a variety of fresh fruits (if G & G have sensitive stomachs, it helps to peel the skin off the fruits). They love all fruits but have obsession with watermelon and apples. Sometimes I add some soy yogurt (which I hate but they love) to their fruits. Did I mention that their stools and breath smell a thousand times better with this new "diet" plan! The added energy and weight loss was an extra perk! Brown started on this plan first and is now 17 lbs. and Pork started a week ago (he's been with the grandparents for the last 6 mos) at 28 lbs. They were about the same size before Pork visited the grandparents. Woof!
I confess. Lola gets a bite of everything I eat. More than one bite. I know, I know. She eats Little Ceasars wet food with a small piece of cheese in the morning and Iams for little dogs to snack on. We found out the hard way that Dairy Queen Heath blizzards make her yakk. She usually gets some vanilla yogurt mixed with the doggie oil. That helps a ton with the shedding. She performs for her vitamins; she thinks they're treats, don't tell her. She's insane for pizza. It makes her loose all her manners. She's not chubby (yet). I heard somewhere that you can give your pug baby carrots for a low cal treat. Lo won't touch them.
Gizmo and Gadget go bonkers for broccoli stems cut into little pieces. they like carrots a lot, too, but cut into bite sized pieces.Gizmo and Gadget's Dad
I feed Gus Innnova Puppy dry food (25%) 75% Innova EVO wet food. He loves this brand and I think it's the best dog food on the market. If you research dog food on the internet you will find out that Innova is held as the very best. It's 100% natural ingtredients no by-products and absolutely no corn or wheat meal these 2 ingredients are responsible for most skin allergies in dogs among other illness. I used to feed him Nutro Natural Choice and I tried Technical but he would gnaw at his paws all the time with these 2 brands. As soon as I switched him to Innova the gnawing stopped and he bacame calmer for some reason. I feed him Canned Salmon and tuna some times and he loves sardines which are well known to be great for dog coat. If you plan on keeping your dog healthy for a long time, I would definitely stay away from ANY supermarket dog food. I won't name brands, you can easily find on the net the information about which brands should be avoided. If your dog food contains by-products in the ingredients list you are probably feeding your best friend ground hooves and feathers and other yummy animal parts like these. Traces of the medicine used to Euthanize sick animals have also been found in many cheap dog food brand some of them sold as Premium quality dog food.
Canidae, Innova, Timberwolf Organics, Healthwise and Eagle Pack are all foods I have used and believe in for my pugs. I currently feed Eagle Pack Holistic Select Chicken & Rice formula along with Natures Variety Raw Frozen patties. My dogs don't have nasty wrinkles, they shed minimally and no skin problems ever! Oh, and no gas or diarrhea. I truly believe these foods are the reason why and am thrilled with the results.
My sister-pug, Daisy, (Mom's new baby!), has developed kidney stones. I suggested her food be changed to Nutro, as this is what my dogs eat, thinking this may be better for her system. Does anyone have any thoughts on this?
My pug and his Son (pug-shu) love their Beneful. The ziploc seal bag is awesome, as I don't have a bag of dog-food just open to the air to get stale. I switch between the Healthy Coat Formula, the weight Management formula and the Regular Food. They never have a problem switching (I guess it's similar enough) and they seem to enjoy it.
Luke (19 months old) eats natural foods. We prepare him organic beef, chicken, turkey and/or bison with vegetables (blended/processed like baby food), then pour hot water on top to remove the chill from the food. We also add digestive enzymes to the meal and give him Omega-3 dog treats. We have a noticed a big change in his attitude and he is also more lean than chubby. He eats twice a day and is quite happy with the set up we've got for him.
Generally speaking most dog foods that you can buy in a grocery store is not good quality food.
As for Iams/Eukenuba those don't rate very high and if you go to www.iamscruelty.org you can see why many, many people have stopped buying those products.
How to grade your dog's food: Start with a grade of 100:
1) For every listing of "by-product", subtract 10 points 2) For every non-specific animal source ("meat" or "poultry", meat, meal or fat) reference, subtract 10 points 3) If the food contains BHA, BHT, or ethoxyquin, subtract 10 points 4) For every grain "mill run" or non-specific grain source, subtract 5 points 5) If the same grain ingredient is used 2 or more times in the first five ingredients (I.e. "ground brown rice", "brewers rice", "rice flour" are all the same grain), subtract 5 points 6) If the protein sources are not meat meal and there are less than 2 meats in the top 3 ingredients, subtract 3 points 7) If it contains any artificial colorants, subtract 3 points 8 ) If it contains ground corn or whole grain corn, subtract 3points 9) If corn is listed in the top 5 ingredients, subtract 2 more points 10) If the food contains any animal fat other than fish oil, subtract 2 points 11) If lamb is the only animal protein source (unless your dog is allergic to other protein sources), subtract 2 points 12) If it contains soy or soybeans, subtract 2 points 13) If it contains wheat (unless you know that your dog is not allergic to wheat), subtract 2 points 14) If it contains beef (unless you know that your dog is not allergic to beef), subtract 1 point 15) If it contains salt, subtract 1 point
Extra Credit: 1) If any of the meat sources are organic, add 5 points 2) If the food is endorsed by any major breed group or nutritionist, add 5 points 3) If the food is baked not extruded, add 5 points 4) If the food contains probiotics, add 3 points 5) If the food contains fruit, add 3 points 6) If the food contains vegetables (NOT corn or other grains), add 3 points 7) If the animal sources are hormone-free and antibiotic-free, add 2 points 8 ) If the food contains barley, add 2 points 9) If the food contains flax seed oil (not just the seeds), add 2 points 10) If the food contains oats or oatmeal, add 1 point 11) If the food contains sunflower oil, add 1 point 12) For every different specific animal protein source (other than the first one; count "chicken" and "chicken meal" as only one protein source, but "chicken" and "" as 2 different sources), add 1 point 13) If it contains glucosamine and chondroitin, add 1 point 14) If the vegetables have been tested for pesticides and are pesticide-free, add 1 point

I feed Beans Innova EVO canned food. I only give her all natural, organic treats. I once ran out of Innova, and my S.O. was layed-off of his job, so money was tight, and I bought what is advertised as "premium" quality dog food, a well-known national brand. I noticed after a time that Beans seemed to be less playful and energetic, but I just thought that at 4 years old, she was finally growing out of the "puppy playfulness" stage. However, I read an article about the horrendous things that commercial dog food manufacturers, even those "premium" brands that you can get at the veteranarian's office, put in their food and are allowed to get away with.
I immediately threw that food out and put Beans back on Innova EVO. Within two weeks, she was as playful as a puppy again, full of energy, bright eyed. I will NEVER feed her any lesser quality food. I researched even the best brands, and found that Innova EVO seems to have the best balance of ingredients for complete nutrition. But the foods listed below are also high quality. I cannot stress enough how important it is to the life and longevity of your dog to just say NO to regular commercial dog food, and feed them one of the brands listed below. - Pugs are definitely worth it! I buy mine at a local feed store, but you can go to the brands website if you wish to find out what stores in your area carrier the brand you're interested in.
Natura (includes Innova, California Natural, Mother Nature and Karma Organic) Newman's Own Organic Azmira Flint River Ranch Halo, Purely for Pets Life's Abundance
I just got Innova EVO (Dry) for Gizmo and Gadget. Right now, I'm mixing it with their old food to have a gradual switch. However, they devoured their meal today, which is more than I can say for their regular food.Gizmo and Gadget's Dad
My roomates feed thier Pug Cole Nutro, it seems to be the only food that doesn't break him out. As for treats, we try to give him these popcorn flavored treats that wal-mart sells. They are advertised to be fat free.
I feed Charlie a product in Australia called Vets All Natural, the easy way to feed the raw food diet. Basically a blend of dried vegetables, fruit, oats, kelp, brewers yeast and calcium soaked in water. I add this to his daily allowance of raw meaty bones (usually chicken wings or lamb), and sometimes a bit of liver, kidney or heart. Is the raw food diet/BARF diet big in the U.S.? It is quite popular in Australia as a healthier alternative to commercial food. It is like what Puglover mentioned earlier about feeding dogs on a diet similar to what their ancestors ate. Anyway, Charlie is very healthy, energetic and he loves eating it.
I feed Wilbur a 1/2 cup of Eukanuba Dry Food, and then I sprinkle a little bit of shredded cheese and mix it in. I feed him in the morning and at night. I used to feed him once a day, but I found spliting it up works much better, Wilbur doesn't beg any more, which is great!
we've been feeding Jeff Science Diet Puppy Small Bites for a while now. My bigger question is how much should he be getting? According to the bag it says 1 cup a day for his weight (about 5.5 lbs). We've been splitting that up in the morning and the evening. Is that too much? Not enough?
he doesn't look fat, the vet has always commented to me that his weight is good. he always gets excited right before i feed him, and runs to the corner where i keep his bowl. he'll never leave uneaten food in the bowl, he always stays there and eats it all before he walks away.
We feed Schroeder and Bullett twice a day. They let us know if we are even 30 seconds late for food-time!
When we first got Bullett, he was severely underweight (rescue dog), so I fed him puppy food. We had to make a special feeder (fashioned out of 2 large old kitchen drawers) for him that wouldn't allow Schroder (who was VERY overweight) access to the puppy chow. That way Bullett could eat all he wanted when he wanted and Schroder was limited to his diet. Then Schroeder lost weight was was able to squeeze into the feeder and we abandonded that idea.
Bullett has been a picky eater since day one. I've tried getting his food wet, adding things to it, a few different types of premium (not supermarket premium) food and he still either won't eat it or pukes it up. I thought for sure the fish and sweet potato food would be a hit, but it wasn't. He did like the Nutro puppy food, but then he gained enough weight and I had to take him off of it. Some days he will eat his food and others he will sniff it, look at me funny and then just walk away. (If I'm not paying attention Schroeder will take care of any uneaten portions.)
They both absolutely LOVE any type of fruit or veggie, minus spinach (I don't think they like the wilty texture--can't chew it well). When cooking zucchini, I usually cut the ends into small chunks and keep them in the fridge for a healthy treat at a later day.
I feed Lucy and Tuffy Wellness for breakfast because it is holistic and contains no animal by products. Then for supper they usually get homemade dog food. I make a stew for them of 1/3 meat, 1/3 veggies, and 1/3 grains. They love it. I made the switch after the tainted pet food. They weren't on any of their products, but the more research I did into the pet food industry kinda worried me. Wellness is one of the only brands that I liked. They also get scraps from our supper as well.
Norton gets chicken and rice, 1/2 cup twice a day. I don't think hunger is a good indication of if a pug is getting enought food, as Norton will never ever turn down food. If he finds the door to the food closet left open, he'll eat until he pukes, and try to eat more. He never gets people food, so when we're eating dinner, he's laying in his bed taking a nap. He will cruise the kitchen looking for dropped things, but never begs for anything other than sticking his nose up against the treat door in the kitchen when we're around it. He's a very trim and slim pug, weighing in at 18 pounds of muscle. The pug down the street that Norton meets on his walks gets 1 cup twice a day, and her owner wonders why he's so obese. Just like people, eating huge portions of diet food will still make you fat.
Lulu and Wink have been eating Honest Kitchen Embark for almost 3 months now. I supplement with a BRAVO (I think) grind that contains muscle meat, organ meat and bone meal; I alternate between different types of protein (bison, duck, sardine, turkey, etc) and always add a bit of salmon oil. I also feed boiled eggs on a regular basis as well as some yogurt mixed with pureed fresh fruit. Both dogs LOVE eating and LOVE thier diet. Lulu used to only nibble at her food (I used to feed Eukanuba) but now she goes nuts at feeding time. The pugs are lean and very energetic - I would definately make a trip to your local specialty dog fod store (not any of the big supermarket types) and talk to someone there about the options for organic, fresh, grain free diets. It is one of the best things you can do for your dogs. There are several good brands available - as mentioned in other posts. Do some research yourself and see how bad it really is to feed your dogs commercial dog food.
I haven't heard of anyone feeding their pug babies "Solid Gold" brand yet. It contains all natural ingredients and their "Hund n Flocken" recipe has kept 2 of my pugs at a healthy weight and helped my 34 lb pug get down to 24 lbs, as it has only 10% fat. You can find it at specialty pet stores and even people's health stores.
I feed my 5 month old pug Nutro Lamb and Rice puppy formula. She loves it, and it is very healthy. It's all natural, and it has no corn in it, which tends to make the hyper. Her obedience trainer suggested it to us. They also have a lite formula, in case they become overweight.
hi we have fed our pug the hills science diet for sensetive stomachs aswell it helped her but she didnt seem to like it very much and rarely ate it we now feed her royal cannon for sensible dogs (sensible means sensetive in french) she is so much better. georgia
Hi! I feed my guys Nutro Natural Choice for overweight dogs. At one point Indy was overweight but now that she lost the weight I am switching them over to regular nutro Natural Choice Lamb meal and rice (now that i read that I am going to have to do that quiz for their food!). They seem to love but then again, they have never hated anything i ever gave them. As for treats I give them the nutro Crunchy Treats: blueberry, carrot and apple. They have real chunks of the fruit/veggie in it and they smell delicious! Also occasionaly they get soft food as a treat, little ceasers or the Nutro Healthy Desserts (Do you see a trend? :p). For bones I buy the real all natural bully whipes (beef penises) they stink but Gus and Indy love them and the don't break off in chunks.
i feed my pug nutrient supreme he used to be on nutrient junoir when he was small when i got him he was on nutrient junoir so i never changed it because when i tried to he got the diharia and he threw up alot so i kept him on it and once he hit the one year mark i switched him to "big boy food" (nutrient sepreme) if i change it he gets very sick so i wouldn't dare
the hard part is the dog food is 17 dollers a bagSandy
I waited some time to get a Pug and that was a year ago, I love my little Ginger and now have a male Dozer to keep her company and maybe provide me with some pups for my two daughters. Pugs I have found are very sensitive to many things food the likely one at the top of the list. Often Pugs are allergic to grains (not including rice). Grain allergies cause them to scratch alot sometimes bad enough to open sores. I also have found out that pugs are very sensitive to flees and are also often alergic to them causing severe scratching. My solution was effective and showed almost imediate signs of relief for my pug. When I brought her home she went right into the tub for a flea bath and I went and bought CORE grin free dog food the fish formula. Within two weeks she stopped scratching other than what is typical and had normal bowel movements. The down side is its about 30 dollars for a small bag and the upside is you don't need to feed them more than a half a cup, so the bag lasts as long as a large bag of the other brands that are full of filler, and I can assure you that you'll have a healthier happier pug living longer. The food is far more healthier and "no fillers" email me for more info. No I am in no way affiliated with the food maker, I love my pugs. Ginger is the Fawn colored.
i used to feed Beau Royal Canin, then we switched to Iams and then again to Lifestages which is a local brand from a pet store called Jollyes. the Royal Canin used to give him the most horrendous bum explosions, so when we switched to Iams, it cleared up a lot but it made him very thirsty. he kept barfing up the Lifestages stuff at first but after awhile it was ok. this week he's been eating Baker's Complete, the gravy stuff which he wolfs down, no barfing or runny poos.
whenever Beau has been sick, or had the runny poos, i've mixed in cooked rice, one part rice and one part of his normal dog food with some hot water on top and it has settled his belly.Bristol Pugs on Facebook
I feed mine Nutro as well..he loooooves it :) we just switched not long ago from 3 times per day to just 2. and i give him a treat every day or so~*BruceLee's Mommy*~ loves her Trupanion pet insurance
I feed my Pugs Natural Balance Limited Ingredient Fish and Sweet Potato and the allergies and flea dermatitis has cleared up. They are 11 and 13 years old and I have done everything over the years to help them. This is the fix. Add Prozyme to their food and watch the magic! I love my Pugs and would do anything to keep them healthy and with me forever..
my poor gunther (6yrs) had calcium oxolate stones removed from his bladder and urinary tract about 3-4 yrs ago. which was expansive and heartbreaking and the vet said i will have to feed him prescription dog food for the rest of his life!...hills U/D. it will help prevent the formation of more stones. its has low protien and calcium. i wish i could feed him something more healthy but i have no choice and i dont want him to go through another surgery. his "special" food is $30 for 8bs and $70 for 28lbs and 12 cans of wet are $22!!! it takes him almost a month to finish a bag. the vet also told me not to give him treats (which i do anyway, but i have to watch whats in it) he loves fruits and veggies apples, carrots and green peppers are his fav. i also have a 4yr old that gives him everything she eats, which is hard to manage haa haa. but so far so good.
I wanted to get a pug. I got one, a black male. He had a lot of strong smell. I was allergic to him, after a week I had to returned him to the breeder. Before returning him, I washed him but the smell was back in days. My question is do males have more scent than females? Do blacks have more scent than fauns? Is the scent because of food? Was he scared in a new environment and that made him sweat and smell? Are there any issues to black or male pugs?
does anyone know?
